Ganglion Cyst

A ganglion cyst is a sac filled with a jellylike fluid that comes from a tendon sheath or joint capsule. Ganglion cysts are one of the most common benign soft-tissue masses. They often develop over the wrist or top of the foot, but can present elsewhere.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include a painful or non-painful mass, numbness or burning and/or difficulty with rubbing in shoes.

What to Expect When You See the Doctor

Your doctor will examine your foot or ankle and may obtain x-rays. The mass may be aspirated to evaluate for fluid inside. An Ultrasound or MRI may be recommended to evaluate the mass in more detail. Sometimes it is helpful to know exactly where the mass is coming from if surgery is being considered.

Treatments

Treatment may involve aspiration with or without injection of steroid, simple monitoring, shoe modifications or removal.
